VK2/MN-114 Mount Chapman

Will keep this one short...

I recently bought an old 4wd, as a weekend off road vehicle with the thoughts of expanding my options for SOTA activations.

My new/old SOTA chariot.

Having no off road experience I thought I would take the new vehicle for a trip to the Buladelah area to activate a few summits and get the tyres dirty.

I initially activated VK2/MN-046 Cabbage Tree Mountain, which I'd activated before and have covered in another Blog entry. I then took the turn off from the Pacific Hwy onto the Lakes Way, following this for 9.8km. Mount Chapman Trail is on the left, behind a gate.

I had initially planned to park here and walk the 2km or so to the summit, as previous activators had done. However, the gate was open, and the trail did not look too bad, so I engaged 4wd and gave it a go.

There were a few rock ridges and humps on the trail, but otherwise it was quite easy, although good clearance is required!

Comms tower on summit, not much QRM though! OCF Dipole in foreground!

Activation was pretty standard, with 8 contacts all on 40m over a 16 minute period. I kept it short as there was a lot of biting insects on the summit (a combination of temp, time of year and the rain we had the previous days I suppose).

Shack, KX3, OCF Dipole and Palm Straight Key

I packed up quickly to get away from the insects, and headed off to VK2/MN-214 for another activation (which is also covered in another blog from a previous visit)
