VK2/HU-054, Broken Back Range

VK2/HU-054, Broken Back Range, and VK2/HU-068 Mount View, Hunter Valley Wine Country (VK2NU and VK2WFT - 23/June/2017)

This was our second attempt at cracking three summits in a day, and like the last attempt, ended in failure.

Broken Back in the North, Mt.View in the East and Mt. Baker (red triangle) to the South

VK2/HU-254 Broken Back Range

Broken Back is a drive to summit, that can be accessed along Broken Back Road. The road, goes partially through the state forest and part through private property, although public access is OK. The road is OK for 2WD, but in wet weather, this could change. There is a large fenced off set of towers at the summit, but there is plenty of room for parking and set-up.

The usual station configuration was used (OCF Dipole), with 11 contacts being made on 40m SSB and CW. Sorry no photos..

VK2/HU-068 Mount View.

Fortunately this summit required a bit more effort... Mt. View was accessed by driving to the end of Mount Bright Road (paved). There is a area to park at the end of this, and the summit is a relatively gentle climb for a kilometer or so (although the track is not very well defined - just keep heading uphill until you see the Trig Marker).

VK2WFT - Just about to leave the summit

The trees were pretty dense at the summit so we used the End Fed antenna on the Haverford Pole.

KX3 @ 15w, 5 QSO's on 40m.

Apologies, but didn't think about the camera until it was too late....

After leaving Mt. View we drove to the South of Mt. Maker looking for access, but the track we had planned to use was through private property, with a 'Keep Out' sign displayed at the entrance. Following the mantra of 'if at first you don't succeed, give up', we headed home, leaving it for another day..
