VK2/NW-097, Flagstaff Mountain

VK2/NW-097, Flagstaff Mountain, 12th April-2019, by VK2NU/P and VK2WFT/P

On the way back from from my Warrumbungle adventure, drove via Tamworth for a coffee and 'easy' summit activation.

There is a well signposted walking track to Flagstaff Mountain, starting at the the end of Scenic Drive, in East Tamworth. There is a picnic area and ample room for car parking here.

There is no need for a map on this one! The walk starts from a gate were Scenic Drive, enters the picnic area, and is marked by yellow sign markers (at 100-200m intervals).

These yellow signs can be found along the trail.

As the sign says. The trail crosses 2 minor summits on the way to Flagstaff, this being the first. these red triangles can be also seen along the route (i guess old trail markers, that have been superceded by the yellow posts)

There are quite a few side trails along the route, but the main path is well marked. It is 2.52km each way, with about a 250m climb, although there are some up and downs, which would add significantly to this total.

The track is rocky and you need to watch your step for most of the way!

Tower on summit, looking from operating location.

Operating position after pack-up. Taking advantage of the limited shade.

VK2WFT/P started off on SSB, and I made 11 CW contacts, before packing up and walking back.

All up a nice little summit if you are in the area, but I would imagine it would get busy over weekends, although there is plenty of room to get away from the main viewing area.

Before I realised I had picked up a few passengers, whilst walking around the summit looking to set-up the mast. The ones on my shoes were no issues, but I had a few stuck to my ankles, and one behind the knee! Removal is both painful and a little bloody, as the spikes have small hooks/barbs, and hold on very tightly!
